A human should have bodily autonomy. Unless someone is mentally unwell and unable to make an informed decision or there is no actual need to end a life prematurely, you should always be able to choose what you do with your body. My mother died a slow and painful death that was completely unnecessary because she was physically disabled and doctor assisted suicide wasn’t legal. I don’t have an issue with people who are against it- but I do have an issue with anyone who hears my mother’s full story and still thinks it shouldn’t be allowed. I think most reasonable people acknowledge the need for it, but disagree on where the line for allowing it should be, and that’s fine. But being completely and vehemently against it is just saying that you don’t care about the suffering of others. As someone who just was in the most insane nerve pain ever for 7 months (been recovering for 3 years) I begged my family that if this was the rest of my life, please to let me go. I totally get it. Sometimes the pain is definitely NOT okay to deal with for the rest of your life. Insane nerve pain in your stomach, limbs, especially your feet, your head and butt, omg, I couldn’t handle it. I told them that I couldn’t be okay passing out from pain all the time like this. I could barely make the effort to speak I was in so much pain. I can only imagine the pain her husband must have been in and the desperation she must have felt to take the risk to carry this out. I hope, if they file charges, the jury does not convict. Where is our humanity?

I was trying to read this article to my wife and just started tearing up so bad I couldn’t read it anymore. They must have loved each other deeply. I hope she isn’t charged with anything. In her early fifties, she suffered severe medical setbacks that robbed her of her sense of identity and dignity. I could only watch. My children never met their grandmother and part of me is grateful because she wasn’t the woman that I grew up with as she neared the end of her life. There really needs to be an end-of-life clinic one could choose when that point comes to us. Like in ‘Soylent Green’. But instead of converting the corpses into food, plant us in the ground to feed the fungi. It is inhumane to let people suffer at the end of life. Someone from my home town did this–iirc it was the husband who shot the wife. We really, really need legal euthanasia in the U.S..
