(I did not really expect to find it when I checked!) When her explained that the whole town, or nearly everyone, lived in that building we assumed it would have to drive people crazy. Took a train there back in the 90s on the way to get on a glacier day cruise. It was really cool. I, as a 12-year-old, was fascinated by having a whole town in just one building.

I took a one month sea kayak course with the National Outdoor Leadership School in summer of 1984, paddling out of Whittier and into Prince William Sound. I don’t recall much of Whittier itself, but the story of the tsunami was certainly not forgotten. We weren’t an hour into paddling before the first whale we saw, a humpback, swam right under our flotilla. Over the course of a month, that would be the only close encounter.
