It sounds like you dodged a bullet to me. Won’t clean up after himself and refuses to cook? My husband couldn’t/didn’t try to cook before we got serious but with some effort and YouTube, he makes great meals. I have some trouble poaching eggs but not so much that I need to give up, burn them somehow, and go lie down. Nah you weren’t too harsh. Maybe he’ll get his shit together before being an embarrassment in his next relationship. This guy is literally my dad. Can’t cook, can’t do domestic chores, can’t feed or look after us when we were kids without her around, and refuses to learn any of it. You didn’t break up with him because he can’t cook. You broke up with him because she’s a useless sack of crap who can’t be bothered to put in the effort to make one meal on one day for the person who does literally everything else for him. Cooking is a skill but it is NOT rocket science. This is weaponized incompetence. My gf always says how much she can’t cook. She can cook, it’s just she’s not comfortable going beyond the basics (eggs, pasta, rice, etc) and prefers that I cook because she loves what I make and honestly, I’m pretty damn good at it. Your situation sounds more deeply rooted than just his inability to cook. It sounds like he needs to learn how to function as an adult. You weren’t wrong for dumping him. A relationship is about partnership, something that doesn’t sound like you were getting.
