I’ve read a lot of stories on this subreddit where people have been practicing for some time (3-6 months or more) and can’t seem to get into it or aren’t seeing any benefits. To these people I would say “try a different awareness practice”. There are plenty of awareness practice out there. Yoga (if you’re doing it right), focusing (Eugene Gendlin), listening practice, body scans… the list goes on and on.

Now some of you might say that everything I just listed is a type of meditation. Fair enough. But not everyone is familiar with these types of awareness practices. So I thought I should make a post about it. Meditation is an action that leads one into arriving at different states of being. Meditation is not a state of being. Meditation is a state of being. Meditation techniques are actions that lead to a meditative state of being. There are many different types of meditative states. I don’t think this statement works, meditation would either be a state of being or an action that lead to meditative state of being, not both. Hunger is a collection of sensations, it may alter your experience in some way.. meditation Is experiencing experience itself. Pure, raw, unfiltered present moment awareness. Still, calm and abiding. I make the Playa los Cuadritos Dominican Republic Boat Palm Tree Watercolor T-Shirt but in fact I love this distinction because I think that this way of looking at it can be pretty unhelpful especially for beginners which there seem to be alot of in this sub. I have met several spiritual bypassers that like to say things like “I live my life as a meditation” when they’re clearly not practicing at all and don’t have a very grounded understanding of meditation. I think the concept of being the meditation rather than doing the meditation can be helpful for advancing those who have been practicing for awhile but it can be confusing and lead to unskillful applications of meditation practice for those who do not have a deeper understanding yet.
