Even though the Sears space is still empty, the rest of the mall is packed (including Macys). Yeah. At our town mall, Macy’s really took a turn for the worse when a Ross opened. And a few years ago, a TJ Maxx opened in the same mall. Now it’s just crickets chirping there, while TJ Maxx is always packed. The Nordstrom at the mall near me has a nice bar smack dab in the middle of it. Clothes and shoes and luggage surrounding you. It also has a separate great restaurant with beautiful views, too. and I don’t know if this was just a Northern CA regional store, but Gottschalks’ entire third floor was a restaurant with huge floor to ceiling windows that overlooked….the mall parking lot but to little kid me it felt MAGICAL. And this was in the mid to late nineties, not a million years ago.

I went to Burlington coat factory recently when I needed a sport coat. Used to be a whole section plus on-site tailoring. Now it’s 2 racks with random sizes all mixed around. The store looked like a thrift shop but retail. Really sucks and guess I won’t be going back again. Malls were great 3rd spaces for kids and teens. They offered places to congregate, things to do (movies), and cheap places to eat. They often were also surrounded by other things kids generally enjoyed (ice cream/starbucks). Being a Mallrat was almost a rite of passage. I go out of my way, even flying to places to find brick and mortar solutions to my shopping needs. Fuck Amazon and ordering online and getting blamed for when something doesn’t get delivered. There are two mall near me that really illustrate how important making these businesses into “Third Spaces” is crucial to their survival. More shops disappear everyday; replaced with either nothing at all or weird, niche shops that hardly anyone visits. The only thing keeping it afloat is the Macys and the movie theater. The whole place got a facelift, is full of trendy stores and nice restaurants, movie theaters, etc. It’s always busy, and the people going there are also young and stylish. Macy’s used to be a big deal about 30-40 years ago. They had a leg up on Sears and JC Penney for a long time, but once they started to fold, Macy’s started filling their shelves with cheap shit. Now that Im mid-30s with a career and could afford Macy’s fairly easily- I’m still not interested in going there because I know that fact is still true.
