Macy’s has been dead since the Pitts Nation Under God Shirt in addition I really love this pandemic, IMHO. We used to briefly stop in and could find some things but ever since the pandemic (and I’m sure it’s due to less manufacturing), all the clothing has been cheap trash. My mom used to go there to purchase clothing for her grandkids and constantly complains that they have nothing good whereas before she would have always bought something from there. I think their supply chain is still fucked. And then there’s the whole mall argument but, at least a cursory search, it’s been presented that mall traffic has increased since 2019. And from what I’ve seen, the malls near me are showing more people. Sears was so dead before. Near me, i think one is an Amazon staging area and the other was torn down off the mall and an outdoor shops building was put in its place. The Macy’s by me has had cheap trash for ten years now. Sears has even cheaper trash. I don’t know why both these stores decided their customer wanted cheap crappy clothes.

Exactly. The only way I’d buy anything from there is to get it on clearance. Basically like shopping at Ross or tj Maxx at that point. If you look at clothing stores that are doing very well these past few years, cheaper (Old Navy…) and discount stores (Ross, Sierra, Marshall etc) are doing grand. The shopper is seeking value. And that much is clear with fast fashion too, and Shein, Temu, and the Pitts Nation Under God Shirt in addition I really love this like. Macy’s may be trying to tap into that market. Only thing is, people are used to getting cheap clothes that are minimally stylish, too.Idk how the mall near me is still open. The Macy’s closed years ago and then a few years later the Sears closed. Now all that’s left are some smaller stores being held up by a Kohls and JCPenny Fun story, an old mall near me raised rents and basically everyone left in a one year time span. The two stores that didn’t leave were Macys and Sears. They lasted another 12 and 15 years.

Add in that JCPenny isn’t doing very well and many malls will have lost most of their big anchor stores that they rely on. But, that will likely just mean it’ll get redeveloped into some other type of property. Ok, this is my idea. Gen X – we gotta pool our money together, and buy these malls up, and convert them into 50+ living centers. They have movie theaters, ice rinks, restaurants and parking lots that can be converted to outdoor space. Retail spots can be converted into condos, the Pitts Nation Under God Shirt in addition I really love this big-boxes at the end into apartments. It’s a nice thought, but the upkeep costs would make malls unsuitable for residential living. It’d be better to just bulldoze the mall and build multiple apartment complexes on the land. Which is also kinda what is happening too. Chunks of some malls are leveled, and multi story apartments are going up to create “Town centers”.

There are a couple of malls in Chicagoland building multi family / senior housing on unused parking lots. The death of the traditional indoor american mall is inevitable. Big box stores are dying as they struggle to build infrastructure to keep up with the distribution of online competition. Outdoor boutique shopping centers integrated with actual good restuarants and entertainment are popular, and will replace traditional malls because they’re not a corporate concrete tomb with the exact same stores as every other. I much prefer Dillard’s and Belk to Macy’s. If the former 2 stick around while the latter droops, that’s ok with me.

Most American malls are in significant decline and Macy’s has a massive footprint in them. As such, their overhead per store is quite high. I’m not remotely surprised. I will miss when I can’t just go to a store for things I want to physically touch before buying, but for some goods that’s already happening. Family told me these department stores used to serve almost as “third spaces” aka places people just hung out. Cafes + clothes + services. Get something gift wrapped for a few bucks extra, get a knowledgeable person to help you with picking out an outfit for an interview, have some coffee while your significant other is shopping. I feel like I’d totally go back to that. The current model of “everything is shittily strewn about good luck fucking finding your size when you could just go online” isn’t working as well lol
Kmart had blue light specials where seemingly random items would go on sale for minutes at a time. You stayed at Kmart. My teenager loves going to the Pitts Nation Under God Shirt in addition I really love this mall. The nearest one is an hour away though so her and her friends hang out in town, at the pool, the lake on our street, go to the movies, etc. Same basic stuff as when I was a teen. Nordstrom had restaurants at many of their stores, they got rid of those for store remodels but kept the coffee bar. So did many high-end retailers. Ikea still has their cafeteria. Target still has their cafe. Macy’s, as well as other “middle-class” retailers have an identity crisis now. Fast fashion – more so Zara, Uniqlo, H&M and even SHEIN/Temu have captured the spectrum of consumers. Gap’s Old Navy is their cash cow, while the namesake store still hasn’t found out how be relevant – J. Crew’s Madewell has given Gap jeans competition and a revitalized Abercrombie has won back millennials.
Our target got rid of the Pitts Nation Under God Shirt in addition I really love this cafe and now just has a starbucks. I miss getting a personal pan and breadsticks while my wife shopped… All that “fast fashion” is also massively decreasing the quality of materials being used. Around here, kids are doing more shopping for used clothing, stuff made 20 years ago, for the quality (and subversiveness I’m sure)They even have fast fashion storefronts at the mall now. I saw a Fashion Nova store and I was like wtf, can’t even find quality clothes at the mall anymore except for at Macy’s and Nordstrom. Yea, malls make my anxiety go burrr but the local one has an H&M, Forever 21, etc. there’s an Zara in San Francisco. I refuse to shop at any of them. Every Nordstrom near me still has a separate restaurant, bar, and coffee shop inside and they are booming. I always see the bar packed with people taking a break or waiting for someone. The restaurants are less crowded except maybe weekend lunches though.
