It’s been done for tens of thousands of years. Turning 18 and getting your own place is extremely new for most cultures. Unfortunately for everyone, housing across the world is now an investment, either commercial or investment. You’re stuck paying 2x or more, and it’s not going to go down. I’m in management and make 6 figures. My housing situation? I rent a house with 4 other people. Buying and owning my own home is not something I see as viable, well, financially sound. For career growth, my only upward move is to be CEO of my company. And even at this point of advantage, I don’t think housing is viable without significant financial constraint, for example limiting retirement savings or making it hard to get a newer car.

It wasn’t always this bad. 25 years ago I had a general labor job in a factory. With that job I could buy and pay off entirely a house of today’s $500,000 value range in all of…7 years. This was a no education general labor job in a factory, and I could buy and entirely pay off a house in less than a decade, by myself. Fun fact. I can get that same job today, and they’ll pay me 2/3 odd what I got paid 25 years ago.
