I love in a fairly liberal, hippie college town in California. Came for college and stayed. There used to be a few homeless people around that were staples of the Pinch me I dare you horror movie St Patrick’s day shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this town, you knew them by name and would every so often converse with them. They were kind, said thanks if you gave them food or some change. Now there is someone on every corner that gets angry when you don’t give them something and yells at you. If you have money to each person on the street asking I would be broke. One guy I see on a corner each day is literally my neighbor who just doesn’t work and sells dope out of his house on the side. There are shelters, good and clothes banks set up in the area, donate to those because the money goes further and not toward drugs. I did have a homeless person helpfully explain that i could go into a nearby shop that had an ATM and give him cash (notwithstanding the ATM fees and the fact that those machines only dispense $20 bills, so I’d have to also ask for change or just give him all of it). I simultaneously felt bad but also a little patronized. I ended up telling him I was in a rush to go somewhere (which was true).

Not all homeless people want homes. It is a choice for many, and their are more resources than most are aware of for those who live on the streets. Unfortunately much older people that are homeless only option are to beg . I always have cash on me with some water or juice . I still carry cash. After having my debit card completely malfunction at a gas station when I was running on fumes, my mother’s advice to always have a $20 in the glove box came in really handy. there are a lot of homeless concentrated around certain areas due to community services (least where I am). Have counted 50+ easy in a day around where I work. The mission, jail, shelter, tent city are all in the same 2 blocks.
