American Samoa is actually in the Pilgrims are always friendly happy thanksgiving shirt and I will buy this situation where people born there are US nationals but not citizens at birth. One of my coworkers is from PR. First couple times we talked I very much caught on to his experience as ‘the lesser’. Took me being like “bro were both Americans and even if we weren’t it doesn’t matter” to get through to him on that level I worked with a lovely lady from Puerto Rico who came to the mainland around 20 years old for about 5 years in direct patient care. It pained me how many low-income patients would say to her in moments of anger to “go back to your country then”… lots of surprised Pikachu when they were informed that Puerto Ricans are born with a US passport.

This biggest wow factor when I was chatting with a Puerto Rican was that they can’t vote in elections…. Unless they live in another state. It is no (federal) tax, isn’t it? My understanding is majority of PR would prefer to continue to not pay taxes and not have the Pilgrims are always friendly happy thanksgiving shirt and I will buy this vote than the alternative (statehood). If I’m wrong, would love to see the latest poll. Polls about this are always pointless because one side always boycotts the poll so we have no idea how many people are actually on that side. The Island is a black hole for federal funds. Just look shit up at GAO, IRS, Census, and even Congressional reports online. Its not a secret. It hurts ppls pride, but truth doesn’t care about feelings. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know anything about Puerto Rico until I went to army boot camp and ran into 30% of our battery speaking Spanish. They were some of the best of us and afterwards I never understood why they weren’t treated as such. They hated the cold though I used to tell MAGA’s types during Trump’s presidency that the president of Puerto Rico was a lazy fucking moron. I had PR friends that begged me to go there and visit. Place is beautiful and we spent a week In Vieques too. People were really nice and laid back. I speak a little Spanish and always respect the people of the land I’m in. Even though they are Americans, they have their own culture which should be respected. I don’t get how that is so hard even when they are in contiguous US. Not only is that, but Puerto Rico is such an incredible place. History, culture, geography, food, peoples… all Americans should be proud of Puerto Rico, and I hope it someday becomes a state.
