You seem to have a chip on your shoulder because you have better technical skills than this coworker, but technical skills only get you so far. Nobody works alone, and coordinating the Pickleball Gift for Grandpa pickleball Grandma shirt in addition I really love this work of others is a hugely important skill for a team. Are there things you can do for others to make their day easier? Are you good at documenting? Write up a bunch of How-To guides and run books. Be very public about where these resources are. Make a fun video about your new feature and pop that into a department meeting so others can see this new thing in action. I’m definitely a person like your coworker. I like to chat to my coworkers, and in doing so, I uncover a couple of headaches they’re having. Sure enough, next sprint, I get a task like that assigned to me because we already started the knowledge uncovering and I know how it’s affecting them in a more real level than, “There’s a bug in console…” I saw where that bug was happening. That said, I do get delays and Slack fatigue from being the Pickleball Gift for Grandpa pickleball Grandma shirt in addition I really love this “face” of the team, and I get massive guilt/anxiety from missed deadlines. A high profile task is much more noticeable when it is delayed. The best way to avoid feeling cheated is to win. So learn and do what you need to get to where you want to be. You can’t live in a place that values cooperation and people and soft skills and client-side interactions and shrug it off. This is such an interesting story because it’s a really important subject and the answer to the puzzle is in the question, but you seem blind to it. This is why soft skills are so important. You can argue until you’re blue in the face, but you having focused on technical only (networking bad, fast work good) and her having focused on people first, collaboration and stakeholder management (what you derisively call consulting with others) has made you a single contributor and put her on the way to management.
