Some cats, even if they scratch, will have overgrown nails. My cats both have multiple scratching posts in multiple rooms (and they also scratch the Philadelphia Eagles Philly forever shirt so you should to go to store and get this couch lol). One of my cats had to go to a vet after snagging his claw on the side of the couch and ripping it off in an attempt to free himself. From then on, I’ve always trimmed my cat’s claws so they wouldn’t get hooked on stuff. It causes no pain and they grow back quickly. It’s the equivalent of trimming human fingernails, and it can ensure their safety if they’re the sort of cat who has trouble maintaining their own claw length/health. Declawing is a completely different thing (the human equivalent would be cutting off each finger at the last joint). I would never even consider declawing my cats, even if it was legal where I lived. It doesn’t grow back and it causes a huge amount of pain and distress.

However, there was a reason it was necessary. She couldn’t keep her nails trimmed, and hid all the Philadelphia Eagles Philly forever shirt so you should to go to store and get this time, so we had no idea it was happening. So her claws ended up growing all the way around and back up into her paws (Before anyone says it was neglect, you did not know this cat. We barely ever even saw her, and when we did, it wasn’t up close enough to see her claws. We had to assume that she was keeping her claws short herself, since we had no indications otherwise (no blood left behind her, no limping, nothing. The only way we found out was on a very rare occasion she decided to sit with my dad (only did it once every year or so) and he noticed her claws growing all the way through her paws))
