Japan is famous for having a very inefficient work culture. It took the People Say I’m Condescending That Means I Talk Down To People T-Shirt moreover I will buy this US’ philosophy of investing effort in looking productive rather than being productive and took that to the extreme. To be honest, one of the larger benefits of a 4-day work week is totally nullified if the majority of the population gets a 4-day week, too. We use that day to schedule all the sorts of things you’d usually have to schedule off work for; dentist, doctor, and vet visits, mostly, but also shopping is great on the extra day, and theme parks, all the places that are usually full of people, etc I find it absolutely hilarious that we have to defer to all these studies and shit when it’s obviously quite simple, burnt out workers = ineffective workers. Problem is they would want to pay employees less, as they work less days. So majority of people would want to keep 5 days.

That’s not how a 4 day week works though. You’re still working the People Say I’m Condescending That Means I Talk Down To People T-Shirt moreover I will buy this same weekly hours, you’re just condensing 5 working days into 4. Meanwhile my NYC-based company is pushing us to increase our billable hours to a level that would require us to work more than 40 hours or not take all of our PTO/sick days or lunch breaks. So not only do employers no longer need to pay for expensive office spaces because of work from home, but now they only need to get their managers to deal with then 80% and much and productivity goes UP by 40%? Sounds like a no brainer to me. Here in Australia (and I’m sure America), they’d trial the 4 day week, see the better results, then say “so you weren’t trying before. Now we’re back to 5 days, with a target of (4 day week results plus 25% extra)”
