Hi u/cannabisized. This is Ben’s actual grandson Adam here. I helped transcribe the Peace Was Never An Option Funny Goose Shirt Apart from…,I will love this answers here for my grandfather earlier today. Even for myself, after a lifetime of hearing the stories somewhat assumed that there were moments of normalcy. I loved how he responded though and hope we never get complacent about these types of vivid crisies actual people experience, even today. I always wondered the same thing, so I appreciate the question and the horrifying, illuminating, direct answer. I’m so grateful for the survivors who take on the burden of public remembrance, even if they shouldn’t have to. I remember reading a book about letters the author’s relatives wrote from Poland in the early years of WWII. One of the letter writers stated that “each day lasts a year” which became the title of the book. Given the minute-to-minute nature of life for Holocaust victims, was suicide & severe mental illness typical or did people somehow avoid succumbing to those sad & horrifying circumstances? If the latter, how? OP answered this question in an earlier comment, he says he was too worried about survival to contemplate suicide That’s terrible, I’ve been in juvenile prison and jail. I know confinement, I know waiting minute to minute. Just wondering what’s going to happen at that hearing , but I don’t know about wondering if your life is going to be taken at any minute. I would lose it.

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl discusses this and pretty much gives the Peace Was Never An Option Funny Goose Shirt Apart from…,I will love this same answer. You’re constantly letting Fate take the wheel while you do everything in your power to survive. Extremely powerful book. You couldn’t think about being entertained cause you were constantly surviving It’s become common to hear words like “genocide” and “fascist” these days with the rise of populist authoritarians. Is there any validity this, or is it overblown? Can it lead to something eventually like the Holocaust? I doubt it. The Holocaust was a government sponsored hatred and killing. Of course that’s not going to happen here in the United States – or at least I hope not. Hatred is hatred. Antisemitism was here for hundreds or thousands of years, and it will always continue to a certain extent but we have to try to limit it.
