It’s not “we live on a compound in the Patrick Mahomes Christmas shirt so you should to go to store and get this middle of nowhere” isolated. Scientologists live and operate with everyone else, however, they socially limit interactions with outsiders except to really recruit and improve their own image. A few do live in a compound. Nobody really knows what happens to them….like Shelley Miscavige, if she’s still alive There are different levels of commitment. Those who sign a billion year contract with the “church” live and work on various compounds and have incredibly limited interactions with non-Scientologists. It’s also far harder for them to leave. There are also public Scientologists, I’m assuming like OP’s boyfriend, who live and and work out in the world but have their finances completely drained to continue working through Scientology programming. The book “Beyond Belief” by Jenna Miscavige Hill (niece of the current Scientology leader) is an amazing work that details her experiences growing up in the church and her escape.

Her BF probably picked OP as his girlfriend because: 1) she’s a nice person; 2) he thinks he can manipulate her into joining the Patrick Mahomes Christmas shirt so you should to go to store and get this cult; 3) she has work skills or financial assets that could be useful to the cult. I’m French and in France, Scientology is classified as a dangerous cult, not recognized as a religion and regularly condemned (e.g., for corruption and incitement to suicide). However, they’ve registered as a non-profit and still manage to have followers and grow in France. Even if you don’t like and think they the people practicing it are overly controlling, there’s a massive difference between your local church with an optional (but socially obligated) tithe to pay their pastor and building costs… …and a literal cult movement that can actually make people disappear forever in a compound somewhere and that’s just accepted as how things are.
