My tenant has a 4-5 year old girl kid. She rarely comes out. Like, only when her mom allows to. Or else, she just stays in home and plays alone with her toys. The day I first met that kid. She understood that, said gibberish something in English and said “I am not coming”. I understand. It’s okay. English is important. Yeah. But giving no preference to mother tongue? English is just a language. Not some fancy thing. Speak whatever you want. But don’t go extreme. Same with the entire extended family as well. Same with most of my friends. Born in the 80s in Bangalore. Parents both speak Telugu but preferred to talk to each other in English (because they both had English medium educations and just were more comfortable that way), with some Telugu sprinkled in. I did grow up fluent in Telugu from grandparents, ayahs, TV, and a bit from parents, but then I went to English medium schools where my classmates had no common native language and only spoke to one another in English, so my speaking suffered a bit. Now I am married to a Tamil speaker and we speak English to each other, so it’s been challenging to do a good job getting our kid to be fluent in either language.
