The thing was, there were ZERO snacks in the evening. We had no weight problems. My hubby’s family were as you described. They ALL had weight problems. I’ll never forget the day hubby and I were out to dinner and he suddenly looked at me with this look like a little kid caught doing something wrong and said ‘I’m full’. No more clean plates for the man. Amazing what parents unintentionally do to their children, isn’t it? My great grandmother was just adamant that you DO NOT WASTE FOOD. She was born in 37 so I’m sure the time she came up had big influence on that but she forced us to eat because she’d rather die then throw away food. I don’t force my kid to eat if we’re at a meal with no distractions. They’re obviously not hungry. Forcing them there is abuse imo.

If we’re in a rush to have a bit of breakfast before school and they keep getting distracted by other stuff, I do have to constantly remind them to eat. They get cranky if they needed to eat and didn’t My parents are great parents. However, this is the Ozzie Smith St. Louis Hyper Signature Baseball Hall of Famer T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this one thing that they really screwed me over on. I mean, I’m not super heavy or anything but I’m a bit overweight. Sure, I could probably be more active but it really boils down to how I was raised. It’s completely instinctive to me even as a 30 year old man now to finish my plate. I could be completely full but my mind always just looks at a meal and I have to finish it. Can’t remember the last time I threw leftovers away. it doesn’t help them, it’s very much about adults being the boss and thinking kids are being disrespectful by saying they’re full or disliking a food. in reality, it teaches kids to have negative relationships with food that can lead to binge eating, purging, or restricting on top of not trusting your parents or yourself, not knowing how to listen to your body telling you that you’re full, becoming a very unhealthily submissive/passive person, etc. My dad used to do this to me. He stopped when I forced myself to vomit directly in his face as he was screaming at me. It got into his mouth 🙂
