Horses are expensive and they typically have jobs. Most people can’t or won’t spend a fortune on a leg amputation to then have a horse that can’t be ridden Not only that, but how do you get a horse into a trailer to get to a place where it can actually be operated on when it can’t stand Why can’t we just induce coma? Is that damaging to the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this horse aside from muscle atrophy? Is it even possible? If so, would it have to be repeated or can we control the duration of comatose states so the horse would keep off the leg for duration of it healing? Their is a fine line between coma and death. So it would be hard. It would be under for like a month maybe more. Which is a long time and dangerous. Then your into physical therapy. Which horses cannot understand.

Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt- About us

Horses also respond uniquely terribly to anasthesia. Not sure why, but our old country vet we’d take our cats to would always give us lessons on large animals. It was his version of small talk i guess. He said that after anaesthesia they often are basically lame, not able to work any more. He thought it was something to do with their lungs but that could be crazy ass ole doc Grody just guessing. Our farm vet said something similar, the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this lungs deflate too much and the weight crushes them or something. He also said ponies and heavy horses were better with leg injuries because they had stronger legs and more muscle to support if they did damage whereas Arabs and thoroughbreds snapped like twigs Have you seen what a coma does to a human? Muscle atrophy, injury from being intubated, loss of motor skills from simply not using them, deterioration of neural pathways in your brain. My sister spent 17 days in a coma, she had to learn how to breathe on her own, walk, talk, eat, control elimination. It’s like hitting the reset button, you’re back to being an infant. Now try to explain to a horse what’s happening and help them relearn to walk and eat. At least with a human whose brain may be injured from being in a coma you can have physical therapists lift them and work with them. With a horse your options are far more limited. Slings and similar recovery equipment might be possible but the logistics are daunting. And then there’s the ethics of confining a horse, who doesn’t understand what’s happening, long enough for the injury to heal.
Horses can’t lay down that long. Their organs, legs and hooves aren’t meant to (a lot of them sleep while standing) and laying down too long causes a host of issues that lead to death. People forget that euthanasia is often the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this kindest thing you can do for beloved animals. They don’t understand why they are sick, they don’t understand why they are in pain, and they don’t process time like we do. They do however know fear, terror at the unknown, etc. Combine all that and it is KINDER to put a horse with a broken leg to sleep. There really isn’t “just induce a coma.” I’m not as familiar with veterinary medicine, but for people sedating someone so they are unconscious but spontaneously breathing is a fine line for a short period of time (aka hours). Since this is going to be much much longer than a few hours and with significant pain that means you’d have to get a stable airway and keep the horse intubated for months. Being intubated that long can cause other complications like ventilator associated pneumonias which could end up being deadly. And since they will need long term sedation they will need more stable access than a simple IV and need a central line, which also comes with risks of infection and blood clots.

On top of all that being on sedation medications that long the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this horse will develop tolerances and need higher and higher doses which have their own risks. And afterwards the horse will need to be weaned slowly off the medications so that they don’t have significant withdrawal which is painful and potentially deadly. Because horses are big, and they aren’t designed to lay down for long periods of time. There’s also the issue feeding a horse – they need roughage/fibre for their gut to function – not like you can send that down a NG tube. And keeping anything on a vent for long periods of time leads to complications. It’s not physically possible. Vaguely related story time: I seen a horse in the wild once that had a massive knee that looked like he broke it and it managed to heal and he was just limping a bit but still getting around with his giant knee. Got an adult female dog spayed and it’s pretty major surgery when they’re over 100lbs. She couldn’t move much to avoid tearing the incision so on top of the cone they had her in gabapentin to keep her sedated. What about something like that? Keep em in a stall for 3/4 weeks in like a light sedation? Still standing but like, repressed? Maybe even a sling attached to a rafter to take the weight?
Even in a sling you’ll likely end up with laminitis in one or more of the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this other feet, which can lead to further surgery, pain and you’re back at square one. Because horses don’t work that way. They aren’t like dogs and cats that can lead decent lives with three legs. The increased pressure on the other three hooves leads to laminitis and other serious debilitating and deadly issues. Odds are they’d end up breaking one or more other legs if not their neck trying to get used to walking with one anyway. Being laid up can also cause digestive problems for horses as walking helps move things through their digestive system. My friends horse broke its leg and she had the horse suspended in a huge sling for nearly 6 months. Its leg was in a cast and it made a full recovery. It just spent a long time suspended in mid air so it couldn’t put weight on its leg. It’s worth noting that horses are something of a special case. If a dog breaks its leg, you can put them in a cast and dope them up so they sleep until the break knits. Horses don’t tolerate bed rest well; their natural habit is to stand and walk around Horses generally don’t do great under anesthesia, older horses more so. They may survive a major surgery but it generally weakens them physically so much that their quallity/length of life may be impacted post surgery. Horses also need to be able to stand and walk to keep proper blood flow through the legs. There is a pad on the bottom of the foot called a frog, it acts like a pump every time they move or shift weight. So even if you could somehow keep a horse sedated on its side long enough to allow the leg to start to heal you would need some sort of machine to work the legs to keep healthy blow flow. Plus you have all the other issues that come with long term sedation.
How do you transport a horse that’s been injured in such a way? It’s a 800+ pound animal, and it’s likely not walking into a trailer, and if it makes it into the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this trailer it would be impossible to get it to lay down for any length of time. All of this, plus one more. Horse hooves are vulnerable to a condition called laminitis, inflammation of the tissue inside the hoof. If not treated quickly, the hoof itself becomes detached from the coffin bone and the whole structure basically fails. It’s unbelievably painful, since the inflamed tissue is stuck between two hard surfaces. Think like, standing on your tiptoes with the worst ingrown toenail you can imagine. Laminitis can be caused by too much pressure on the hoof, or by too little (or by a bunch of other stupid things like eating too much sugar). When a limb has been broken and is healing, it can’t bear weight, so it might get laminitis. When a limb has been broken, the other hooves have to bear more weight, so they might get laminitis. I don’t really like when people frame it this way. You have to remember the natural function of a horse is badically to slowly consume small amounts a low nutrient food all day in open fields. We apply unnatural stress and strain and give them nutrient supplementation their bodies aren’t really designed to handle for the added calorie need.
I’m not saying horse ownership or sport is cruel, but people blame the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this horse for “being designed bad” when these things are generally caused by things they weren’t designed for. The more specialized a speices becomes the more susceptible it becomes to major changes in body or environment. Nah we kept a mare who snapped her hind leg in a sling in a stall for about a month try and keep her immobile while her leg healed. She eventually just went insane had to put her down. You try everything and it’s not a question of expence people will spend what it takes but the humane thing is to put them down. I had a two year old colt tear a tendon in his front leg at a barn I worked at. He was confined to his stall to rest for six months. Horses aren’t designed to be in a stall all the time. They need to be able to move, to run, to graze. And he was a toddler. His brain wasn’t fully developed, so he felt that lack even more. By a few days in, he was already pacing and screaming all the time. A few weeks in, he picked up the habit of kicking his stall almost nonstop. When we’d take him out for a small walk as physical therapy, he’d basically turn into a kite, fighting the lead rope and rearing. It was dangerous and terrifying to work with him. There were honestly times when I thought it would’ve been kinder to just let him go, he was so unhappy. He finally got the okay from the vet to go from a stall to a small paddock and he had to be drugged so he wouldn’t run around like a maniac and reinjure himself. He vastly improved his attitude, but he was still a dick. He gave me the worst bite and the worst kick I’ve ever had from a horse. And it was totally only because he was bored. Some horses just can’t take stall rest. It breaks them
I looked after a horse with a foot injury and it went nuts. Tried to bite everyone who walked past and just weaved back and forth in its stall. The vet even tied a rubber weight over the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this entrance to snap him out of it with a clunk whenever he started doing it. Eventually when he was ready to go out again he was unstoppable, he’d just take off and wouldn’t respond. He ended up charging through a fence into barbed wire and being put down anyway She had a 24 hour watch on her try keep her relaxed if she was stressed she was in foal so we did not think could keep her sedated. Just didn’t work out. horses are flight animals, to keep one confined and unable to stand or move around is taking away one of it’s basic necessities for survival and comfort. Horses are often always scared/on edge and looking for an escape plan. They are simple animals and can easily go crazy without their needs being met Below the knee, they get very poor circulation. A small fracture can heal, but they’ll be on stall rest for an extended period of time. It might be enough to force a working horse in to retirement.
A full break simply won’t heal. It would mend much slower than one of your limbs, and a horse can’t stay off of its legs for that long. Blood doesn’t pump through a horse’s legs unless the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this horse is up and moving. Also, a horse can’t lie down for very long because if it does, its weight will crush it. They can take naps laying down, but they’re never for very long. Much of the time they take cat naps on their feet. (Horse naps?) So when any part of its leg is broken, there’s no way the horse can lie down for the weeks it takes to heal, and there’s no way to let it walk around so the blood will circulate. So they’re doomed. I’ve always thought horses are very strong, impenetrable animals, like a crocodile or something. Maybe due to the term “horsepower”
I love them too. Lived on a horse farm with Anglo Arabs and through a deal for 10 years. They’re a lot of work though. The more I learned about them the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this more I wanted to learn. One fun fact is that a horse can gallop to its death, and still gallop while it’s dying. The action of the horse’s legs keeps its heart pumping, and when the horse stops running, it will drop dead. So in these movies when you see the horse running and running for miles on end, it’s just not realistic. I had a cat who was attacked by a dog, her back left leg had to be amputated, she would not rest and eventually she caused more damage to the tissue and herself, she had to be put down to prevent further suffering bless her. animals can be repaired like humans but animals dont understand to be still and rest while they heal even if you bring them food water and carry them to and from their designated potty area.
Horses are biologically designed for movement. While you can immobilize them long enough for a bone to heal it very often causes secondary issues like colic, laminitis, stomach ulcers, and undue stress. Unless it’s a small break or a non load bearing bone it’s often more ethical to the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this animal to euthanize as opposed to putting them through a long, painful, and psychologically miserable recovery. Horses need to ambulate for proper circulation. People can be on their backs for a while to recuperate – horses just don’t work that way. There are some times when a horse can have surgery, and perhaps have rods/screws inserted, depending on the break, but there are also breaks that likely wouldn’t heal properly. There’s also the possibility that the surgery could cause other problems (laminitis, I’m looking at you, you horrible condition).
There’s a whole post on Reddit somewhere of a vet describing how horses are literally trying to die all the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this time. All the humane euth comments are unfortunately correct. Just wanted to add that surgery might require blood transfusions as well and horses have way more blood types than humans with no universal donors. And mix matching blood types can cause a systemic allergic reaction. There’s way more vet med details like that that make rods, slings and comas less ideal as the prognosis and overall remaining quality of life is not good before factoring in how expensive long term care could be. You technically can but it’s basically just incredibly difficult to keep a horse immobile for the length of time it would take for an injury like that to heal without causing them significant other health issues. A big part of it is how a horses circulatory system works. They need to keep their legs moving to stop blood pooling in then which is impossible while a serious break is healing.
It’s the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this sheer weight. If a horse breaks his back leg it might be healed, but a front break is impossible. The weight of the shoulders, neck, head and front of the body are on the front legs. The only horse I ever heard of that had any luck with a front break was Spanish Riddle, back in the 70s. The removed his ankle & hoof and replaced it with a steel one attached to the cannon bone. He was led around at a walk for the rest of his life. When a horse breaks their leg, it’s like the chalk breaking by something heavy pushing the top of chalk lengthwise into the ground, where chips come off. I have a 32” mini horse. My other mare kicked her Dec 1 and it’s a hip socket fracture. Her size allowed the vet to get the X-rays without anesthesia.
There isn’t much precedence with this because people typically put horses to sleep because likely they can’t be immobilized for the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this time it takes. The inflammation is less now and will start laser therapy. I have a sling that I use to suspend her just to give her good leg a rest Tinkerbell tax Oh man I hope she heals up ok. I’m sure it helps that she’s a mini, it would probably be a LOT more difficult with a full sized horse If it were a large horse, I’d have euthanized no question. She’s luckily only maybe 250lbs and she seemed to adapt to being in her stall. Realistically I didn’t think we would be as far along as we are – I figured she would tell me when she is done. The main challenge with putting metal rods in a horse’s leg after a break is the sheer weight and structure of the animal. Unlike humans, horses rely heavily on their legs for balance, movement, and support. Adding metal rods could potentially disrupt the delicate balance and natural movement of the horse, leading to complications like lameness or further injury. Additionally, the forces exerted on a horse’s legs during movement are far greater than those experienced by humans, making it more difficult for surgical interventions to be successful. While advances in veterinary medicine continue to explore new treatments, the complexities of repairing a horse’s leg remain a significant hurdle to overcome.
Their diaphragms aren’t as strong because they use the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this mass of their organs to inhale and exhale. They are super prone to getting pneumonia and often don’t recover. Veterinarian here. For certain types of fractures we do. But for long bone fractures the forces applied and horses inability to be three legged lame – use their other three legs to compensate for the bad one – lie dogs and cats do make stabilization impossible. If we could suspend the horse for 6 to 8 weeks and not experience severe muscle atrophy, pressure sores, GI disturbances, ect. maybe but as of today, no such system exists. It’s not done because in order to heal a load bearing bone, you have to keep the load off it. There’s no practical or humane way to stop a horse from trying to stand or allowing it to stand without weight bearing on the broken limb. I’ve never heard a horse’s leg break and never want to but I’ve talked to vets who have and they say it’s literally like a gunshot and it’s completely unmistakable.
For whatever reason horses are professionals at getting injured and when I do it’s very often very serious and very expensive. Can’t talk about horses but cows. The rule of thumb is that after 6 months of age you can’t fix a broken leg anymore. You don’t even have to try the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this hind legs, because of the anatomy you can’t really put a cast on that at that age. We’ve had two break a front leg. One with 7 months and it luckily healed, but it didn’t grow back together the same as it was before, which is fine at the moment, she’s pregnant with her first calf and doesn’t have any issues, but I will almost certainly cause problems in the long run. The second one was 16 months old and we also tried with her but sadly the leg didn’t grow back together and she had to be put down.
The main problem is the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this will to live. Having a cast on is a big obstacle for the animal, especially cause they don’t understand what it is and why it’s there. It makes everything in their life a lot harder, simple things like walking, laying down and getting up are all of a sudden real challenges. It can very much happen that they give up. Barely eat/drink, and just in general don’t show a will to live. It’s hard to explain but quite obvious when you see it. And in this situation you have to put them down. No matter how the healing process is going, if they get to that point the only kind thing you can do is put them to sleep, as sad as it is. I talked to an equestrian vet about this at a wedding. She said that racehorses 1) love to run and 2) are prey animals, and once they break a leg they “lose their will to live.” She said that she’s seen people who tried to rehab them, but the horse is in so much pain that it’s unethical and almost cruel. Alright y’all, how do I disable notifications for this? I really do appreciate everyone pitching in but now it’s driving me nuts
A horse doesn’t heal bones like we do. Their bones stay in a state of broken permanently. Putting steel rods in will just mean it has the Our Football Is Bigger Than Your Expectations Nike x FC Barcelona La Liga Champions 2024 25 With 28 League Titles Won Shirt Additionally,I will love this broken end of the bone still pressing on the metal that never heals. Almost all animals that heal broken bones are social animals that can be cared for by others of their kind. A horse can’t be brought food by other horses and their main defense is running away. Thus, they don’t have the ability to heal bones This isn’t quite right – horses can heal broken bones, just not their major leg bones. Have one now who broke a spint bone (small bone under the knee) and with rest and care it has healed. One thing I was told is that when horses come out of anesthesia they are disoriented and panic, thrashing around a little. The room is padded. The legs are so thin and fragile there is great risk of them reinjuring themselves.
