The offence is absolute – you didn’t have a ticket. Just because you didn’t know/ignorance/stupidity etc is irrelevant. You ARE guilty. IANAL but your not guilty plea didn’t make sense. I don’t know why you wouldn’t as you would 100% not win in court. You did commit the offence It always makes me wonder how lucky I’ve been so far to not get fines on trains. Over the years I’ve had several cases of wrong tickets, wrong trains, wrong stations. Only ever explained the situation and it’s all been good. Yet there are always people getting shafted for silly reasons. Closest I’ve come would be missing my train from south to north, being told I needed to buy another ticket except for the last section. Which I did, then got almost all the way there with no one checking my ticket. Only to get on the last section and have the ticket man tell me about 10 mins from the end of my journey that my earlier ticket wasn’t valid. Yo which I basically told him to do one, as id already paid for two tickets no one has even looked at and wasn’t paying more for another one. He said that seems fair, and off he went. Always worth trying to BS your way out of a situation.

You should have just accepted the initial penalty instead of letting it escalate. It has always been the passenger’s responsibility (harsh as it may seem) to ensure the correct ticket was purchased for the journey taken. It’s a great offer. It would cost you so much more to lose in court. Take it and say onnnnneee hundred and egggggighhhty! Youbhabe better things in life to do I assume. Pay it and move on.
