For the Original To Those Who Think You Have Me Figured Out I Hope You Like Surprises Shirt and I will buy this flowers, Nieddu sourced fresh blooms from a florist weekly, mostly white gardenias and cymbidium orchids. These were enhanced with white feathers as well as other synthetic flowers that were handmade for specific iconic looks. “Each day Andra would handpick three flowers to place in her hair,” explains Merriman. “Bobby pins were pinned crisscross over the stem and through the hair, while Andra held the flower in place to rest on her face below her hairline and above her brow.” And—voilà!

Thanks to Ross and Merriman’s painstaking, era-specific styling, Lady Day’s intrepid gardenia style is being introduced to a new generation in exquisite detail. And it’s a vital part of Holiday’s multifaceted legacy. As Merriman puts it, “Her presence, her unique voice, her resilience, and even her glamorous looks gave Black people a sense of pride, hope, and a will to fight for justice.”
