Academics or those in more technical fields need to know more obviously. I don’t think every character is 100% unique anyway. A lot of them are combinations of simpler characters and someone who understands the character system could probably see a new one and understand what it means from context sometimes. Just like we do with English words. You say that because that’s what you are used to, so obviously you think your way is best. That’s obviously not true for China hence they found their way the best. You say you can convey any meaning with 26 characters and you would need to know 2-3 thousand characters to read a Chinese newspaper. You would need to know equally as much to read an English newspaper. The 26 characters you think can convey any meaning actually conveys zero meaning. An English speaker for example who has never seen the word “Mechanic” would have no idea what it is. They would have to have know the word before, which is the same in Chinese. Chinese however has the added benefit of the word being made up of characters that convey the word. So actually a Chinese reader would be able to read a newspaper despite never have seen some words and still understand most of it. Also being how diverse China is, it would’ve been impossible to function as a country without their writing system

There’s no inherent meaning to the letters in the Latin alphabet in English so there’s no need to remember what they mean. But in Romance languages, some letters do have meaning. Like -a is seen as feminine related, and -o as masculine in Spanish. Now imagine every single symbol for a letter had an associated meaning to it. That’s essentially Chinese. They’re building blocks to a larger picture, which is why studying kanji/hanzi is important and difficult because it’s centuries of interpretation that’s been blurred and expanded by modern innovation.
