Mommie Dearest is based on Christina Crawford’s memoir of the same name, which chronicled the abusive and neglectful treatment she endured at the hands of her adoptive mother. The film unflinchingly depicts Crawford’s alcoholism, mental instability, and physical violence, painting a chilling portrait of a woman both glamorous and monstrous.

Dunaway’s performance as Crawford is a tour-de-force, capturing the character’s fragile psyche and mercurial temperament. She effortlessly switches between moments of maternal affection and unbridled rage, creating a complex and deeply disturbing portrayal. Scarwid’s equally powerful performance as Christina conveys the daughter’s torment, vulnerability, and resilience.

The film’s cinematography and editing contribute to its unsettling atmosphere. The use of flashbacks and distorted camerawork conveys Crawford’s fractured mental state, while the jarring cuts and rapid editing evoke a sense of constant tension and unpredictability.
