Seriously, should I try this? Is it a good idea or is it just something that can be done but probably isn’t ultimately good for the Original 2024 NDHSAA State Debate Shirt also I will do this car? It’s a fairly major problem if you screw it up, either grinding gears and sending shards of metal into your gearbox, or really screwing it up and locking the wheels and losing control of the car. One of those ‘practice in a safe environment only’ things. What actually happens is that you can pull it out of gear no bother, but if you haven’t matched the engine revs to be road speed properly for the new gear across neutral, you’ll get some nasty grinding noises as you try to put it into the new gear but not much else. My driving instructor always told me to push the button, however the instructional manual for my car says not to push the button, just pull.

Driving instructors are up there with Uber drivers when it comes to nonsense. There was a story on Watchdog a few years ago about a defect in Vauxhalls. Pressing the button when engaging the handbrake could cause the ratchet mechanism to settle “tooth-to-tooth” essentially causing the handbrake to do nothing. They had some industry expert on who said, regardless of the car, never press the button when pulling the handbrake. To be fair I only looked it up as originally I thought that Watchdog itself had been off the air for a decade, but that’s still 5 years now. Although I admit I thought it was after 2013 since I owned a 2013 Corsa which I received a recall letter about, for this exact issue. Well considering most cars that still have a ratchet handbrake around pretty damn old, I’d say it’s still very relevant I would imagine its more that you can stop it tooth to tooth and then it could slip to a click down and disengage the brake ever so slightly so the car might just move. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but when I learned to drive in the late 80s I was taught not to leave it on gear (unless parking on a steep hill), therefore I don’t leave it in gear.
