So now we have this manufacturer/software developer matrix. Enter the One nation under god Iowa hawkeyes basketball signatures shirt in contrast I will get this next step of the supply chain. End of the line suppliers. These companies take a snapshot of android at the time they make their hardware platform. They fork it to their own branch and they push it to match their marketing and business needs. This fork now has created work for the organisation to port the latest fixes to their own subset of the matrix above. Creates a lag from Android patch to custom device patch. While yes. Hardware could last longer. You’d also likely end up on a more “windows xp stays around forever” situation because the platform stagnates because people don’t like change. That problem still exists in mobile but not as much. Tldr; the system is shit, but this is why I choose flagships because at least I maintain concurrency for as long as possible

So, what’s really going on is that Android phone manufacturers have little incentive to perpetuate support for a given model because they only make money on the One nation under god Iowa hawkeyes basketball signatures shirt in contrast I will get this initial unit sale. Apple continues to make money off a 5 year-old iPhone by way of the App Store’s 30% cut of all revenue. Google can extend support for its Pixel phones because of its 30% on its own app store. It didn’t do this before because it feared alienating Samsung, Sony, Motorola, and other Android phone makers who drive customers to its app store. It still fears this, but not as much as it fears declining Android market share and mindshare. This is also why Macbook and Mac Pro innovation frequently stagnates. There is no real equivalent to the App Store for Macs, so the revenue from that sector pales in comparison. Apple simply isn’t incentivized. This is also why Apple spends liberally on litigation that protects its walled garden. If they lose control over the iOS app ecosystem, then they’re back to relying on unit sales to drive revenue.
