I mean, I’ve never heard anything good about one, although that just be because bad news sells better then good news. If you’re considering a home in an HOA, request a full copy of the rules and regulations as well as the by-laws BEFORE YOU BUY. Don’t want to be bothered or think this is nonsense? Don’t buy a home in an association! By-laws/ rules can be changed. It’s often not up to the board though. It requires a community vote, so often the true problem is that not enough of the community is engaged to secure those votes. The primary value in an HOA is (or should be) in preserving the curb appeal of your community and keeping costs associated with things like lawn care, snow removal, and outside maintenance down because they’re purchased “in bulk” through the HOA, rather than by each individual home owner. Mildly frustrating to see people bash HOA’s when they literally accepted the terms and chose to live there in the first place, haven’t run for the board, don’t go to meetings, and didn’t bother to read the terms – then acting shocked and appaled when they get fined for breaking them. Totally the same as getting mad at a police officer for speeding and acting like you shouldn’t get a ticket because you didn’t know what the speed limit was. I’d put up my most useless garbage and tell her: “That has no use in my home. I’d call that the epitome of luxury.”

Never again! So Karen is actually broke and needs to fund her MLM by hawking a bunch of her personal crap. The garage sale mandate is just a screen to hide this fact . Do the HOA’s bylaws even provide for/require this? Someone probably already said this, but check your lease. It’s hard to imagine they snuck in required garage sales. If it’s not on the lease, they can’t force you. Never understood why people “buy” a house in a neighborhood with an hoa… How do you own it if someone else tells you what you can and can’t do with it? I would never live someplace with an HOA (they’re always shitty McMansions in subdivisions anyway) but if I did, I would pull out the bylaws and note there’s no compulsory garage sale. My MIL condo has a HOA, for 2 years I stayed with her Monday through Friday (I was working 75 miles from home, so I would drive up Monday morning, do my route, go to her condo, take a nap, go back & do my midday run, back for nap & then go back in the afternoon to do my take home run & Friday evening I would go home) MIL condo is 2 stories with a double car garage, she parked inside 1 side & I would back in front of the other garage door. This is a duplex condo, the neighbor called the HOA & told them that I was parking in front of HER garage door not MIL’s. I started snapping photos every time I parked (because I parked under MIL’s address on the building) and I started sending them to the HOA myself, I’ve never parked on that woman’s side.
