It is difficult to say precisely how much. I would say more than most people think. The mind and the Official yes i am old but saw Bob Dylan on stage star shirt and I will buy this body together determine health as humans intrinsic phsyiological balancing systems work 24 hours a day. For example, diet and mediation will help but cannot balance out grossly deficient sleep lack. Now add in the imbalancing that can happen over a lifetime and one can see that the mind probably contributes quite a bit diseases ie both physical and mental conditions. Disease happens where the body and mind cannot balance out changes ie damage exceeds and healing If you want to get into the details then the work of Dr Ainslie Meares covers this in some of his books. He was the late eminent psychiatrist who taught a type of meditation to mnay people over decades. He documented the benefits including the many conditions he found were helped. Meares taught a type of meditation involving relaxation of body and mind that allows the mind to still.

To prevent disease involves consideration of stress, diet, sleep, physical activity (not too little, too much) and several other factors. Books have been written about that topic including some that incorporate Dr Meares ideas. Learning to reduce anxiety (the Official yes i am old but saw Bob Dylan on stage star shirt and I will buy this emotion of stress) is very helpful in improving mental health as one is calmed and can then learn to live a calm and active life. This is the way it is in Dr Meares’ method, anyway. Meditation is just one tool that one can use but sometimes the person has issues that need the assistance of a Mental Health pro. If someone had perfect mental health but was physically unhealthy or even terminally I’ll they would still lead a happy life but someone in perfect physical condition with terrible mental health will be living in a nightmare every single day. So I’d say mental health counts for the majority of overall health.
