I’m going to pay devil’s advocate here (ironically for Christians in this context) and suggest that they may not be horrible, incompetent parents. Before you downvote me into oblivion, I recommend googling “Fatal distraction” and reading a few of the articles you find. There’s interviews with parents who’ve fatally left their kids in hot cars, and it’s pretty insightful. These parents aren’t deadbeats who don’t give a damn, nor are they stupid enough to not realize the danger of hot cars. They are amazing parents who’ve made one incredibly tragic mistake. There’s obviously a huge difference between me forgetting my laptop in my car and forgetting a child in the back seat, but all it really takes is a quick distraction, a tiny lapse in attention, or just plain-ol “what was I doing again?” to make the biggest mistake you will regret for the rest of your life.

But consider looking at this through a lens of tragedy instead of a attacking the character of the people involved. This comments section is demented, unfortunately this happens quite often and is tragic. Very likely this was accidental, the vitriol here is crazy. I feel horrible for the peoples that can’t escape Florida or Texas, it’s clear that they both are becoming unlivable for rational and sane folks. I helped raise (co-parented) my 2 children as a single dad, and never once left them unattended for even 30 seconds in their young lives for any reason at all. So abortion, after six weeks lands, you in jail, but you can “accidentally“ forget your baby in a hot car and get nothing but thoughts and prayers. Got it. “Let’s go to Church and worship the Lord! We all protect children, we are proud protectors of children! Not like those nasty Democrats, us Republicans actually care about children.” “Uhh…. God’s Will for you little buddy, nothing we could have possibly done. Now, off to take away rights from parents and kids who are trans… We protect children after all.” Listen there truly is no situation where this is an explainable mistake. Let’s say the best case scenario is both parents specifically told a nursery worker or third party to go get the baby from the car and the third party forgot, it’s still egregious because literally no sane parent is going to step away from a vehicle while the child is still in. When my kid was a baby I had a rule about always having a window or door fully open if you were getting out of the car and leaving the baby in the car seat. I would even wait to shut my door until my co parent had opened the baby’s door. I was petrified that my kid would be accidentally locked in the car as we stood there.
