Driving instructors are up there with Uber drivers when it comes to nonsense. Well considering most cars that still have a ratchet handbrake around pretty damn old, I’d say it’s still very relevant I would imagine its more that you can stop it tooth to tooth and then it could slip to a click down and disengage the brake ever so slightly so the car might just move. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but when I learned to drive in the late 80s I was taught not to leave it on gear (unless parking on a steep hill), therefore I don’t leave it in gear.

There is no downside in having a secondary back up to your hand break, you ain’t going to damage the gearbox/clutch by leaving it in gear. Just seems daft not to. The not indicating thing is about awareness. When you do ‘advanced driving’ you’re expected to have an all around awareness of other road users. If you indicate when there’s no one to see it, it’s assumed that you haven’t taken proper stock of your surroundings and the lack of other road users.
