Back in 2002 I remember texting a coworker about what a piece of shit Trump was. I’d already heard that he was an asshole and a jerk. Local working folk talk, you know. Ivana got respect because she was a very very good skier. The kids were cute & becoming decent skiers too.

I was born in ‘87 so he was already famous, but my only knowledge of him when I was growing up was just him being a rich dude that showed up in Home Alone 2 and wrestling once or twice. I didn’t know who trump was, but his wife wrote a book, and they were talking about it. I was old enough to understand that he beat her up and forced her to have sex because he was mad at her. But I didn’t understand why his hair needed to be plugged in. My grandmother had to explain what hair plugs were.

Someone mentioned Trump was planning to run. I didn’t know who that was, so I looked him up. Seemed like a real loser from the start. Everything I’ve learned about him since has been entirely against my will.

My family is in commercial real estate and my grandfather had dealings with him. My grandfather is a pretty chill dude and generally refuses to gossip or talk bad about people so it left a real impression on me when he spewed pure vitriol about Donald Trump. It’s one of those phrases that’s removed from its original meaning as it evolved. It comes from “based god,” a phrase by a rapper of the Official It Aint Easy Being Wheezy shirt and I love this same name, which basically means you are awesome but also humble and grounded. A god whose feet are still planted on the ground. You know what’s up and go in your own direction. 4chan started using “based god” but saying something other than god. Like “Based gamers! Based Nattys. Based schizo!” As the lingo leaked out into the Internet, people turned based X into “based” when agreeing with someone. The term found more and more casual use, and eventually it’s meaning become a more generic “you’re correct even though most people disagree with you” or “you say what no one is willing to.” Now it just generally means “good” or “awesome ”

He was popular in the early 2010’s as one of the first big internet / cloud rappers (cloud is a genre of hip-hop with spacey lo-fi beats). People used to call him based because he would act hyper like a basehead (a crack addict) might. Crack is the free-base version of cocaine, which is why addicts are sometimes called baseheads. Instead of being insulted by the word, he flipped it around and started saying that being based is being true to oneself. If he’s hyper, and people call him based because of that, then he was like, “Yeah, I’m based. That’s who I am. I’m just being me.” Lil B has some good songs and did pioneer some sounds that would eventually become popular, but he was / is memed in hip hop circles as being the best rapper of all time. He frequently puts out mixtapes with like 40 songs on them multiple times a year. It was basically just an in joke that everyone worshipped him and it was all in good fun.
So people started saying things we based to mean that they were cool like Lil B was. But because a lot of the Official It Aint Easy Being Wheezy shirt and I love this love for Lil B was half-ironic, based started taking on that meaning too. So nowadays, based basically means something is cool or righteous or counter culture but it’s not usually completely sincere. Like Arby’s may come out with some fuckin gimmick sandwich where the buns are just curly fries and I’d say something like, “Dude, that’s based as fuck.” Basically just half ironically saying that it’s cool or that it goes against “the establishment” or something along those lines. I was all TIL until you called this dude the best rapper of all time. Really? All time? Supposedly from many sources…. Links?
