At some point this will be out of my hands. This goes beyond stories of the Jewish Holocaust. All people have stories to tell that get lost with each generation. Hopefully between technology like StoryFile and motivated youngsters we can keep it alive. I designed my book to be a teaching tool and not just a memoir, so that makes it a bit different from most other survivor memoirs. I wrote it so anyone could understand the story and also learn how to turn that experience into a life that matters. Night changed me. I’ve read scary things before but parts of that book will stay with me for the rest of my life I taught Night to my 7th graders for a few years in a row. It’s an insanely powerful book and the 7th graders really do respond to it. Parts of the book can take an emotional toll to have to teach over and over, but since we were focusing the daily lessons on literary aspects, it wasn’t demoralizing or anything. However, the students that I taught didn’t really have the requisite background knowledge about the Holocaust to really visualize the narrative, and I figured out that the most efficient way to remedy that was to show Schindler’s List over the course of a few days (with lots of stopping, discussing, writing, etc). But i teach more than one class and I can tell you that by the 3rd watch of the day, I was a mess and could barely bring myself to watch the screen. This may sound like a philosophical question, but I assure you it is a personal one. How can you go on, how can you live a good life, knowing that there is so much evil and hatred in the world? How can you continue on when you above almost all others have experienced the depravity that so many humans are capable of? Every day I see things which do not even compare with your experience, which leave me tired and weary. I feel like I do not have much hope for humans, anymore.
