After our first child was born we established a routine where we have a set amount of time once a week each week to check in and see how each other was doing and feeling. Saturday or Sunday mornings. A lot of time the little things that would happen that would cause us to explode were rooted in issues that went unaddressed for too long and just bottled up until the pressure couldn’t be contained anymore. We make sure we do it either before the kids are awake in the morning or when the kids are napping. But honestly having it be the first thing you do in the morning is best. Wake up, grab your respective cup of coffee/tea, sit down and soak in the peace and silence before the chaos… and just TALK. Its such a luxury to have that time together to really just focus on eachother where your energy is not yet spent, it’s not the work week, and it could be structured or unstructured. My husband and I used to start it each week with the same few questions when we started out. Now it’s more of a free flowing conversation. How are you feeling? Is there anything I’ve been doing that is upsetting you? How can I support you more? How is work going? Any concerns or things on our mind about the kids?

What’s funny is we decided we needed to start this routine of a weekly check in after we went nuts on eachother about something so mundane I can’t even remember. But it’s made a huge difference. We look forward to our talks each week and sometimes it’s simple/easy/quick and other times it’s heavy and for a longer stretch of time. The point is both if you get heard and get to voice your thoughts, feelings, and frustrations with no distractions or disruptions. Don’t keep score. Be open about what you need and vice versa. Be there for one another. Listen to their issues, but don’t always try to fix them. Remember why you love each other. Get adequate sleep.
