It is labeled as the ingredient “meat” on the list of ingredients; every other type of meat in its ingredient list is identified by source animal except for horse meat. I live in French Canada and I had no idea this was a thing in French Canada. It certainly is not something that’s available at your local grocery store. Maybe butcher shops that specialize in game meats (including emu, etc) but I’d be willing to say 99.9% of people never had horse meat. I’m American, I think it seems fine to me. Why should the horse get a pass when everything else on a farm gets eaten. I’m very curious as to the origins of the taboo. It is so strong in the states, at least nine states have outlawed raising or consuming horse meat. So we should eat the cats and dogs too then? Not saying we actually should, just pointing out this is not a fleshed out idea.

We could also look at it the Number 22 najee Harris shirt but in fact I love this other way around. If the life of a horse is worth more than my tastebuds, maybe the life of pigs and cows are too. In principle I don’t think it’s particularly different from eating cows, but (a) there are only 4 abbatoirs slaughtering horses so they’re shipped very along distances for slaughter, and anecdotally I’ve heard that the fact that every horse is a different size means standard stunning methods don’t work well so for a time a lot of horses were going down the line at least partially conscious (apparently they just shoot them in the head now, which seems like an improvement) (b) horses aren’t raised for meat so they receive a lot of medicines that can persist in the meat and aren’t licensed for human consumption, people have raised some health concerns about that.
