The difference between “yes you look fat” and “no, you do not look fat, that dress is just unflattering” is a couple of words and a brain cell. It shouldn’t be the Now Watch This Drive Shirt and I will buy this equivalent of walking on eggshells. You aren’t in a work meeting where critical feedback on a project is being asked for. Date for the night or not, it’s an personal relationship that requires a modicum of common sense and tact. Which are important things to be able to implement in all aspects of your life. Imagine you’re a cashier at a supermarket. The job sucks and customers are often rude for no reason, your boss is a taskmaster and you need to look busy all the time or else you get written up. You know, a generally shit job that anyone would agree is a shit job. But you need this job, you can’t just tell them to shove it. So one day your boss comes up to you and says “this job really sucks, doesn’t it?”

Do you agree with them because it does, in fact, suck? And likely get fired. Or do you use your common sense and say something like “it can be a difficult job, but it’s very rewarding helping customers!” Or some such nonsense. It’s not entirely true, or entirely false. You might even call it a “little white lie”. It’s harmless and spares everyone’s feelings and makes everyone happy. That’s what tact is. I guarantee you’ve done this before. And it’s still not even lying! You said that she isn’t fat but the Now Watch This Drive Shirt and I will buy this dress made her look fat. Therefore the dress is unflattering. It’s just another way of saying the same exact thing, without needlessly being an obtuse jerk. Edit: You can whine all you want about how she shouldn’t ask if she doesn’t want to hear that, you can stand your ground and die on that hill. Just be aware that people are very likely going to avoid interacting with you if that is your attitude. You know the people who say “I’m not mean, I’m just blunt and people can’t handle it” or “I’m not rude, I just tell the truth and people don’t like the truth”. That’s the kind of person you’re being when you take a stand like that. It’s valid to be that person, but everyone dislikes that person.
