Both are musical icons. Johnny Cash, somewhat more so, because he was far more out in front of it than Trent Reznor. And Cash had nearly 40 years on Reznor. And, I am sure, Trent Reznor’s life has had its dark moments. But Johnny Cash had a pretty awful life at times, even after he was wildly famous. I find Reznor’s original version more angsty and Cash’s more lamenting and painful. Trent drags you down to such a low level about drugs. Trent was in a darker place than usual when he wrote those lyrics. I respect it if someone prefers Cash’s version, but I can’t understand it. Nothing comes close to the original for me. of course not. i just mean i always see people who prefer the cash version. and thats reasonable, its great. just funny to me One such example that springs to mind is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Most people don’t even know about the original version because of how good the popular version is Eh, it was never a “real” version. It was a demo by the songwriter trying to shop it around. Lots of songs have that.
