Idk, looking around the Noam Chomsky American professor and public intellectual T-Shirt and I love this last couple of years it seems like capitalism doesn’t work for anything/one except the wealthy. But in a competitive free market system, the inmate market will lead to lower costs and better inmate outcomes. The prison corporations will compete against each other and the corporations that give the best “value” will out-compete the ones that don’t. /s This is exactly the “argument”. But the reality is it comes down to who donates the most to campaigns and then there is no competition it’s a monopoly. For example they change $5 a minute to use the telephone, which of course just drives smuggled cellphone traffic inside. If the food is inedible you have to buy food at the commissary. Also you can’t just go and open a new prison corporation, the market is already controlled by a few big companies, and they will get those prison contracts through bribery.

Corporations don’t exist to provide the Noam Chomsky American professor and public intellectual T-Shirt and I love this best value. They exist to extract as much profits as possible, even if it leads to a poor service or product. That is why the prison industry is so great. You can take in a lot of money and provide little to nothing in return, because no one cares about the well being of inmates. Just look at Joe Arpaio, he had his tent city and bragged about spending more feeding dogs than the inmates, but he was embezzling all this money that he “saved”. But all the bitter old people praised him for treating inmates like shit. Undercook fish? Jail. Overcook fish? Also jail. Don’t show up for a doctors appointment? You’d better believe it. Jail. well, for Black kids, sure. the party of personal responsibility is adamant Black people need to do the right thing at all times or else, for their own good.
