They were terrible parents who came from terrible parents. Most of those parents who practice this still have that toxic individualism belief that everyone must achieve something themselves and that life conveniences should be earned. At the Nike Boston red sox just hate us shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same time forgetting or omitting that the economics and times in general have changed considerably, and 1950s/1960s life philosophy isn’t really applicable anymore nowadays. In short, most of those are plainly assholes who don’t think much and don’t really care about their kids. To repeat on their kids a harsh treatment one received themselves is one of the most selfish and stupid moves ever. I am Latino, and I remember, when I was in college, since I lived quite far, was not able to go home for Easter and so senior year a friend invited me over to his parents place. We went out to have Easter dinner with his family and we were talking about what I was going to do after graduation, told them I was gonna head back home and look for a job. I remember my friend’s father, who worked in government, telling him, “well Stephen once you graduate, you’re on your own.” I was taken aback, culture shocked, by his father’s comment essentially reminding him he was gonna be kicked out after graduation, but I didn’t say anything. It definitely does happen, now that was many moons ago, don’t know how common it still is.
