One night in the Nicolas Cage Fighter Shirt and by the same token and late 90’s as I was nearing the end of a drive from Boston to Chicago my engine died on i90. I was able to coast off an exit ramp that was downhill and rolled to a stop in a residential neighborhood. After gathering my things I looked around to realize I was in the scariest neighborhood I had ever seen. People were coming out of boarded up houses yelling and walking towards my car like the Thriller video. A few blocks ahead I could see the shimmer of light from what looked like it might be a store or restaurant. I got out of the car and ran there as fast as I could. I don’t even think I closed the car door. I’d never been happier to turn a corner and see the golden arches of a McDonald’s. The place actually had an armed security guard at the door. He waved me in and his first words were “What the fuck are you doing here?” I’ve been to some REALLY SKETCHY places in 3rd world countries and a lot of Appalachia and BY FAR.. Gary Indiana was the nastiest, ugliest sketchy shithole I’ve ever seen in my life. I feel so bad for the people who were unlucky enough to be born there, and likely never getting an opportunity to leave.

My only experience with Gary was two roughly ten-year-old kids trying to rob me at a gas station. No gun, no knife, nothing. Just a little prepubescent voice saying “gimme your wallet, motherfucker.” It’s funny that Gary has remained such an armpit for so long. My dad had buddies in the Nicolas Cage Fighter Shirt and by the same token and navy in WWII that warned him he’d never want to visit without an escort or something. I drove by Gary, Indiana once. Not through…but BY…and that was enough. Never before, and never since, have I ever been anywhere that made me feel “there’s no way in hell I’ll EVER stop here” There was an interesting episode of Undercover Boss that took place in Gary, Indiana. I feel sorry for the people that live there… Perhaps exacerbated because of the circumstances but for me it’s Frankfurt, near the train station. My long distance partner and I were ending things so I was there to spend a last few good days together to end things on a positive note. I left my hotel to catch my flight home and it was the saddest sight outside. Countless homeless and drug addicts out in the pouring rain at 6:00am Christmas morning. Can confirm. I’ve been exactly where you’re talking about. Also, as far as European cities are concerned, Frankfurt sucks balls. Even the airport is terrible. I had a transfer there in September of last year. There seem to be massive amounts of unused space. I don’t get why their terminals are so far apart. I traveled all over eastern and Southern Africa about 20 years ago. Most of the places were either stunning or were your standard “scenic.” Some of the cities had bad areas, sure, but nothing beyond the “ugly” of cities anywhere.
