But the Nice I Never Dreamed I’d Be This Crazy Grandma With The Cutest Grandkids Ever But Here I Am Shirt and I love this resemblance to the two ladies themselves is, of course, tenuous. When Lady Diana Spencer met Prince Charles, she was a woefully undereducated virgin raised on almost Victorian principles in an aristocratic household with an inborn reverence for the crown. When Meghan met Harry, she was a sophisticated woman with a career, life experience, agency of her own, and apparently had no idea what she was getting into. (Curtsy? But she’s your grandmother?)

Despite the Nice I Never Dreamed I’d Be This Crazy Grandma With The Cutest Grandkids Ever But Here I Am Shirt and I love this constraints of her early years with the Firm, Diana, perhaps almost miraculously, grew into an extraordinary woman with a preternatural gift for empathy and compassion. The Duchess of Windsor was an elegant flibbertigibbet who had a soft spot for Hitler and dangerous walkers. The British establishment saw to it that during the war the Windsors, deemed a security risk, were shipped to what they considered an ignominious posting in the Bahamas. The duchess commissioned the decorator Mrs. Winthrop Curtis Bradley to make over the governor’s mansion in Nassau in a modish version of navy and white Caribbean chic and ordered shantung frocks from Mainbocher to match. After the war, they were exiled to a café-society existence in Paris. The sharp-tongued Washington chronicler Susan Mary Alsop wrote to her friend Marietta Tree in 1945 about a meeting with the Duke of Windsor, noting that he had spent the day watching the duchess buy a hat, been driven to the bois to see some American soldiers play football, and returned home to find the duchess in the middle of her French lesson. “He is pitiful,” noted Alsop. “I never saw a man so bored.”
