Hanzi is a bitch to deal with, and you need to recognize thousands of sometimes very similar, sometimes quite complex characters – traditional Chinese characters can round 20 pen strokes per character easy. Many of them are very abstract or unintuitive, and require you to know a lot more background info and remember a lot more stuff just to be basically literate. Mao’s one, single non-disastrous idea might have been simplifying the Nice 30 years of NKOTB signature shirt but in fact I love this damn things. In Japanese, where Chinese-derived characters are called kanji, it’s even worse because it was slapped onto their own language while retaining some Chinese-derived pronunciation and ways of combining characters. It’s vaguely like English and Latin/English and French at one point in history.

Frankly, our alphabet is a lot more “Babby’s First Writing System” than their system is – not that that’s a bad thing. What a shitty world we live in. Yes because thousands of symbols that can cover everything from words on they’re own to combinations to make more words, is worse than 25 of them that are 95% useless on they’re own 1,016 more repliesIf anything, characters are infinitely more complex than alphabets.
