It’s always good to stay on a bartender’s good side, especially if you’re a regular or going to be a regular. When I used to go out to bars/clubs, I always tipped a dollar on my first water. Sure – water is free, but I’m paying for the bartender’s service. Not to mention, if when I approached the same bartender later for a refill, they would almost always have the water tap ready when I caught their eye. If I got more than one refill, I would tip another dollar. 2-3 glasses was all I would typically drink. I order a pitcher of water for myself and give them $10. I don’t drink either, but I’ll toss back a pitcher of water and my friends know not to fuck with my vat of water!

I don’t drink, never have, and I’ve gone to many bars and didn’t drink. If you’re getting food, as far as being polite to the establishment, then that’s def no problem. As a bartender I can confirm that I literally don’t care what you drink. I will think about your order for however long it takes me to take care of you. Don’t overthink it. I’m here to help you have a good time. Some people need a cheese fry to achieve that, someone needs a pina colada and someone else just needs a water. Most bars will serve you water. If there is some kind of music or comedy event, they might have a two drink minimum, in that case they will expect you to pay for some kind of soft drink. In the US, no bar will force you to buy alcohol (Not illegal, just bad business practice.)
