Using stereotypes, Portland Hippie and Oklahoma Redneck are both white but their cultures have nothing in common. White Americans being the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this majority are the default/baseline American culture. Adding “white” to it is redundant and therefore makes you wonder why it’s important to add it and if there is a more nefarious reason to point it out. For what it’s worth I think that’s generally something people who are very online say. And online discourse always gets dominated by people with kind of fringe opinions. Because “whiteness” is something that was made up and invented. It’s only defined by its opposition to being “black” in america as a justification for racism. The groups that are considered white has historically changed over time.

The irish, italians, germans, and hispanics have all been considered “non-white” at some point or another, and there’s still some debate over who falls into this New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this definition today. It’s an in-group, out-group classification. Italians used to be called guinea dago’s, which was basically a racial slur stating that they were non-white. It’s a waste of time to talk about “white culture,” which often times is just a rough smattering of completely different european cultures. This is a waste of time. You would be better served talking about english, or french, or german, or irish, or whatever other specific unique culture you want to talk about. While these cultures would influence one another due to cultural disfusion, they were still unique and interesting from each other.

And before anyone asks, the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this same is essentially true for black culture. “Black” is a term that was foisted upon victims of the slave trade. “Black culture” wouldn’t have meant anything to the men and women who were stolen from different african nations, and who spoke different languages, and had different cultures. It was an invention, just like “white culture.” People don’t even understand what the word “culture” means. They think it means wearing a funny hat, eating special food and observing specific rituals. Being a white American isn’t any kind of “default”. The default is eating raw animals and sleeping on the forest floor. From the moment one human taught a second human how to sharpen a stick, there was culture. Oh you hear that a lot in Europe. “Ah those Americans, they have no culture” says Hans Müller, wearing his blue jeans, sitting in a mall, and some English speaking pop music is blaring from the speakers.

Aside from your excellent snark, your point hits at a deeper issue tangled within the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this broader and somewhat unspecific og ask. Because one could also put it like this: Hans Mueller’s Blue Jeans has been invented by German immigrant Löb Strauss whose design integrated older French and Italian traditions of navy work clothes; the Mall may be rightly considered the epitome of uncultured architecture, the modell heterotopia; and pop music largely consists of centuries of Black music, appropriated and filtered for white audiences.

If white Americans don’t have a culture then I am suddenly confused by a lot of jokes about white Americans told by POC comedians… Whiskey? Irish. Pizza? Italians. Beer? Germans. Hamburgers? Germans. Fried chicken? Irish. Vodka? Eastern Europeans. Fraternities? Greek. I believe it’s because “white” people are so varied just like others from other ethnic groups that it doesn’t matter. These are the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this cultures that I identify with and associate myself with: bay area native, sf/east bay punk and raver/club scenes, video game/RPG/d&d culture, liberal/progressive values, bay area educators. I would also argue that if it’s “American” culture, it’s inherently for all Americans regardless of skin color. If there is a “white” culture it probably comes from a Norwegian country where they are more homogenous
This is a strange CMV. “white” people don’t have a culture as there are so many varied, different nationalities that are “white”. Swiss culture is vastly different from Greek culture which is very different from Australian culture and so on. Whatever accent you have is 100% normal to you. Your culture is normal to you, other culture’s stand out because they are different. because white isnt a culture. the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this only reason we say things like “black culture” is bc most of us do not have any documented history gojng back to Africa because of slavery. Theres italian american culture, irish american culture, german american culture, etc. But white is not a culture. I agree. We definitely have a culture. Everyone does. And I’d say more than anything, the type of culture is less race based and more demographic and class-based.
The people who say that tend to either be people with limited exposure to Americans, or Americans who have rarely travelled elsewhere. We do have a culture and it’s largely based on European mores and norms. We share a lot with our European friends and allies, particularly Great Britain, but there are differences. We’re louder, fatter 🫢 yet oddly enough more polite and friendly than most Europeans. And we’re a rambunctious lot. After WWII A German general is believed to have said, “The reason the New York City Sports Buffalo Bills And New York Yankees Diggs Allen Aaron Judge And Anthony Rizzo Signatures 2024 shirt moreover I love this American Army does so well in wartime, is that war is chaos, and the American Army practices it on a daily basis”. But much of this is being a young country. In Great Britain they would talk about history and point to Windsor Castle first built in 1070. We would point to the Henry Whitfield House in Guilford, CT built in 1639 Every group has culture. Americans can BE uncultured in their ignorance, but white Americans being white Americans is their culture. You don’t know your culture when your submerged in it every day.
