I worked for a supermarket that made us ask customers for donations. Each time they donated, we had to wave a stupid clapper. Managers would hover around and make sure we asked. I would see many of the same customers every other day, or sometimes every single day- I hated having to shake them down for donations, so I after a while I just refused. Some cashiers were ass-kissers, so they always asked and made sure to use the clapper like clowns. The bagger who was a full-time guy, bascially said the whole thing was a tax write-off. This is why big box retail sucks, they always want you to hit some kind of metric per month. Sell x amounts of plans, get x amount of people to donate… I worked in an indie record/CD store in high school and all I had to do was ring people up and help people find music. The CDs sold themselves. It was a great job.

After that, you get done ringing yourself up, trying to figure out how to open those stuck together plastic bags, and then they say “would you like to round up so we can make ourselves look good by using your donation in our name,” When the truth is… If you want to really donate to a good cause, mentally put that $.50 in a piggy bank, And when it builds up a little bit… In your mental piggy bank… donate it in your name and get the tax credit for it. I’ve never seen any place ask for more than $3. A lot of places now ask if you want to round up your total, so the most you’d give is 99 cents. Christ, people are so angry at businesses they find anything to yell about. Guess what, you don’t have to do any of it.
