I had this conversation with my dad last week. Living in an expensive suburb my mom could never quite grasp why I was never able to save any money and was only ever “just getting by”. That’s accurate, but again shows me she doesn’t understand how things work. They could afford a 700-800k home with what they will make on the house they have paid off as the down payment, plus what they have been able to save over the course of twenty years on two incomes plus a pension. They could take out a mortgage on 100k for 15 years and that would be the worst of it. Sorry mom, but I really don’t feel bad for you.
