Government corruption, the lingering effects of Communism and horrible infrastructure made it just a horrible place for tourists and locals alike. 20 years ago, between the customs officials stealing everything from your suitcase, the taxi driver charging you $100 for a ride from the airport (and if you called the police, they would back up the taxi driver because they would take $50) the hotel charging you 4x the price for being a foreigner, police demanding a “photographer fee” if they saw you taking a picture, etc., it was just ridiculous. Fortunately, the old Communists are slowly dying off and as more people leave Romania and see what life is like elsewhere, they tolerate less BS from their government and the young people that choose to remain are reinventing their country as something altogether unique and wonderful. Don’t get me wrong, the government is still corrupt but, nowhere near what it was. Romania has a rich history, amazing landscape, beautiful architecture, great restaurants and quite surprisingly a very wonderful tradition for the arts. There’s so much new talent and creativity there and the traditional arts like the opera and ballet are still going strong. It’s escaping its past, maintaining its traditions and making a new future for itself. I see wonderful things in its future. (It’s why we bought a house there.)

I loved visiting Bucharest as a solo traveller. It was a very cool place; I remember the Never play with my heart There’s fire inside skull shirt Also,I will get this buskers music especially. The streets had a very central European vibe; think cobblestones and alfresco cafes. Waiting for the day that much of the middle east to comes up on this list, hopefully before the last of the world heritage sites get blown up. 30 years ago there wasn’t much, but now there are many booming cities like Omaha, OKC, KC, Wichita, Tulsa, Lincoln, etc. A lot of cities have followed development plans similar to those of Cincinnati and Indianapolis, and are starting to truly explode and thrive i was going to say el salvador but u beat me to it im from there so im biased but i can 100% say that it is much more safer to fly there now than it was 5-10yrs ago. it is also so beautiful!! we have great beaches for surfing and just visiting, locals are friendly, food is delicious! i highly recommend el tunco, mizata, el zonte, el sunzal, camp at conchagua, etc Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Used to have pristine beaches where locals and foreigners alike could enjoy the water, some grilled seafood and some cheap foot massages. It was seedy in a wholesome sense. Today it’s a dystopian hellscape literally run by Chinese mafia. Nice if you enjoy being chained to a drainpipe in a call center or having your kidney repossessed in the basement of a casino. But it sucks for tourists and for locals. The latter can’t afford it and the former recoil in disgust. I think you didn’t understand the assignment correctly. Unless you think the dysfunction and danger is an improvement from the laid back vibes.
