I’m American and I don’t think I know a single person whose parents did that. Even older people. I know it’s a thing but I highly doubt it’s as common as it sounds. Combine poverty with a mild education at best, and you have generations of families just repeating the Never Forget September 11 2001 Memorial Day American Flag T-Shirt in addition I really love this same trauma and mistakes. It’s rare nowadays. 40+ years ago an 18 year old could work part time and pay for all college expenses. Or work full time and rent an apartment and simultaneously save up to buy a house after a couple years. Those days are long gone. If you kick out an 18 year old currently you’re dooming them to living on the streets. This is a you have parents that no longer want you under their roof. They never wanted children and now of age, they want them gone.

For me, it was go to college, go to work, enlist, or move out. No bumming it. So, I chose option 4, which turned out to be the most difficult bc I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I always had to learn things the hard way so it wasn’t a surprise when I left. I made some mistakes along the way but managed not to fuck it all up completely. My kids thought it was unreasonable to expect them to be adults and move out on their own by 25.
