I disagree. Trial run is at least a temporary placement, temporary escape from a shelter. Fostering is also temporary placement. Fostering to adopt is a trial run. Anything is better than a shelter. I’ve fostered tons of animals (mostly cats and dogs). They typically get a 2-week quarantine period from the shelter before being shipped off to a rescue or being placed in a home. Sometimes it’s much longer than that, if there is an issue that requires special care or if placement is unavailable. With very few exceptions (like one dog I’ve kept due to issues that made her unfit for placement), they all do perfectly fine in their new environments.

Heck, even adult pets that have been displaced from a long-term home (say upon an elderly owner’s death or something) do just fine. Better than fine, actually — I find them to have a much higher degree of awareness than younger animals, like they sense what’s going on. They are more likely to be euthanized in a kill shelter (younger animals are way easier to place), they already have an established temperament and generally much better manners, you already know how big they are going to get, what kind of coat they have, what kind of care they require, etc. They are just wonderful. More people should give them a chance. Closest to a trial run if recommend is getting a senior animal. They’re easier to take care as far as energy goes, and they are only around for a while so if you hate them you’re only locked into a 5 or so year commitment. Rather than 20.
