End of the Nemesis Divina Satyricon Shirt Furthermore, I will do this day it is this: in the US we have a 24 hour media cycle made hyper competitive by a culture pursuing unrestrained profit over all else. If you are a part of the media, whether thats a giant corporation or a small podcast or YouTube or whatever content creator, you are in a pretty intense competition for clicks/likes/viewers or whatever other metric of audience engagement applies to your particular medium. For decades now, the winners of that competition have operated under the maxim “if it bleeds, it leads” or, in other words, violence and fear generate audience engagement. If you can convince your audience that you have information to share about a real threat to them or their loved ones that they can only find out about by consuming your media content, you can near guarantee a lot of audience engagement with your product. Which is what makes you money.

While that philosophy manifests itself in all sorts of ways from hyper focusing on news reports of government disfunction to empasizing low level crime reports and arrests (where I live the Nemesis Divina Satyricon Shirt Furthermore, I will do this local.news is 75% arrest reports, I’m not exaggerating), one of the classic tropes of this style of news is the “do you know where your children are?” story. There’s an extremely disproportionate focus in American media on threats to children, because it generates and emotional response that encourages engagement with the news product so that parents can learn about the latest supposed threat to their kids. Essentially our media and some of our politicians spend a lot of time hanging the specters of various boogeymen in our kids closets over our heads and they’ve been doing it for so long that we’ve become paranoid and hyper vigilant. Worse we think that’s normal.
