Sending money to Ukraine so they can fight the Nelson Cruz Boomstick Dominican former professional baseball pitcher T-Shirt But I will love this war themselves and weaken Russia in the process is the best value for money proposition you’re likely to see. Of course it’s not like the Republikans will support pushing back on Papa Bear Vlad as he tries to take Eastern Europe and beyond. I mean I’m proud blue and am all in favor of aid to Ukraine. And there’s sectors of farming that are doing well. But as a farmer let’s keep a couple things in context. That “wealth” is definitely there and not disputing that but keep in mind farming is incredibly capital intensive (which makes entry into it almost impossible sadly). One tillable acre in southern MN is give or take 10,000. And to support a family on that income you likely need to operate somewhere between 500-1500 acres depending on some variables. I’m a hog farmer. And independent hog farms are facing extinction. I don’t blame Biden for that (Trump was the absolute worst). But we need enforcement on anti competitive practices in an industry facing heavy consolidation. Our 3 families under the family farm sell 25,000 pigs a year. We lost money on every pig this year. My hope is to reach $5 margin per pig, but rarely do we over the last decade (keep in mind this is 3 families that gets spread out to). We have a boat load of safety nets to keep the lights on on the crop side (which there’s good and bad with). But until we’re able to enable a true free market and not the sham we sell into now we need some on the hog side or it’ll all be fully integrated. Two weeks ago, 75 head were negotiated in this country. 40% of the pigs sold in this country have a direct tie back to cash through their formula pricing. There were 490,000 sent to market that day. Those 75 head have a hugely disproportionate impact on the market. And there’s no way for us to know if it’s a farmer selling to a packer or if it’s Smithfield selling pigs they raised to another packer (75 pigs is not even half a semi load). So a packer could take a hickey on selling a part load in order to buy back thousands of pigs cheaper due to a lower cash price.

I’d love to know what constitutes the Nelson Cruz Boomstick Dominican former professional baseball pitcher T-Shirt But I will love this 1.3m in “wealth” referenced. I’d imagine that includes their land, and other assets like equipment. A farmer could easily have 1m in assets and still be losing money. Absolutely! And are there any liabilities included in that wealth valuation? I mean we run an operating line of 700,000 in the hope of turning a maybe 50,000 profit on the hog side. Our 10 year old combine cost us 225,000 this past year. Amazes me how often we as farmers lose money and blame the “dems.” I will say democrats have not been great at connecting with rural america, and that’s provided the avenue for Fox News and their ilk to further the divide One older fella that I worked with had given up farming back in the 90’s, and said that while he earned a lot of money farming, he would end up moving it right back out. Farmers can never get enough support in my mind. As smallholders get squeezed by factory farms on the bottom line, we should do everything we can to support you and others facing harder and harder conditions. I respect any person that lives their lives making our lives go. Thank you.
