The law says that the left lane should be used for passing, but does not explicitly forbid using the left lane for travel unless it impedes the flow of traffic. So there’s no legally “proper” lane, and using the left lane is perfectly legal in many situations. to be completely honest. I do this when I’m on a long drive. Back when i was in college and had a 8 hour drive home I would end up in the passing lane to ya know pass someone and then i just without even thinking would kinda zone out and just cruise in that lane and not even realize that i was still in that lane.

Most of our motorways have 3 lanes and some people will sit in the middle lane when there’s nothing to overtake. So people end up slowly passing them in the outside lane, when both of them could be over one lane. Occasionally some people will sit in the outside lane for longer than necessary, but not often. I travel in the left lane not necessarily to pass because I know that my average speed is still higher than the lane to my right. And by a considerable margin, not just “I’m 2 mph faster, so I’ll just clog up both lanes!” I think if you’re substantially faster than the lane to your right in moderate traffic (not bumper to bumper, but not totally open), then it’s more than ok to be in the left lane. As long as you pull over to the right for someone faster, which I definitely do, usually to large trucks, like what the heck, how is an F-150 faster than me??? Because when I move over to let faster vehicles go by they usually do not pass me and end up driving right next to me until I have to slow down for a truck or on ramp person in the right lane then tuck back in behind them in the left. If you are riding my ass and I move over then just pass me for gods sake.
