Get a decent torch. Doesn’t need to be crazy bright, 200 lumens is fine. Just broadcast to any would be muggers that you are paying good attention. What area is it in? Busy or quiet? I’ve worked til late in jobs for most of my life. My main tip is to just walk with purpose. Get in the NCIS GIBBS RULE 91 MUG shirt moreover I love this habit of sharing your location on WhatsApp or Snapchat if you use it. Don’t stand in out of the rain in doorways even if it’s bucketing – the only time I’ve had people approach me was doing this with a laptop in a bag not designed for downpours – I was afraid it would fritz. Get a good rainproof one if you’ve got the need! That’s the only advice I’d add to what’s already here. Trust your guts – of you ever feel unsafe don’t brush it off as silly, just skedaddle to somewhere fast as you can. Good luck for your new job! Also if you are ever in fear just walk in a zigzag pattern, as if you are counting the pavement stones, no one is going to approach a maglite extra large torch carrying potential unhinged woman.
