An attendant is usually happy to help. Thank them for helping. Take the opportunity to have a little convo or make a joke or give a compliment to their look or ask how their day is going. When they’re done assisting, Thank them twice and smile again and go right back to your phone while continuing to scan items leisurely. Once finished, always take receipt and smile and say thanks again to the attendant on the way out. This is the (third layer of plausible deniability; everything combined) you were kind, polite, smiled, asked questions for help and thanked them on the way out.
